This week’s writing stayed close to a familiar thread for me. The balance between paying attention to how things are done and accepting that they will not always be done perfectly. On Monday, I wrote about something very ordinary that, in Japan, turns out not to be ordinary at all. Cutting vegetables. What I once thought of as simple preparation is actually a whole system of techniques, each with a name and a purpose. Sengiri, rangiri, sogigiri. The way something is cut shapes how it cooks, how it tastes, and how it is experienced. I see this most clearly when I watch my husband in the kitchen. His movements are precise and consistent, almost like a language he speaks fluently. Mine are less exact. Somewhere along the way, the dynamic shifted from correction to quiet acceptance. The food still comes together. That stayed with me. Technique matters, but so does knowing when doing something with care is enough, even if it is not perfect. On Wednesday, I found myself looking at a similar balance in a work setting. Preparing for a session with Quick USA, I reflected on something I often see in Japanese organizations operating in the US. There is a tendency to keep direction open a little longer. Not because people are unsure, but because they are still aligning and considering context before stating things clearly. In Japan, this usually works well. People are comfortable reading nuance and letting clarity develop over time. In the US, it can feel different. Not wrong, but less clear than expected. Someone I spoke with recently put it very simply. They did not need everything decided, they just needed to understand where things were going. That distinction stayed with me. It is not about rushing decisions, but about making direction visible earlier so others can orient themselves. Just like in the kitchen, it is another balance between thoughtfulness and clarity. Atami. A short train ride from Tokyo that changes the pace almost immediately. What I have always liked is how quickly the shift begins. Even at the station, where there is a foot onsen right outside the platform. You arrive with momentum, sit down for a few minutes, and find yourself staying longer without really deciding to. From there, the day unfolds without much structure. A walk toward the sea, something warm to eat, maybe a short ride up the hillside for a view over the bay. It is simple and unplanned, but it creates just enough distance to feel like you have stepped out of your routine. All three pieces come back to the same thread. The balance between intention and acceptance. Whether it is how carefully something is cut, how clearly direction is communicated, or how much structure a weekend needs. And how often the most sustainable approach sits somewhere in between. Doing things with care, while allowing them to remain a little imperfect. Giving direction, while leaving space for it to develop. Moving forward, while knowing when to pause. There is no perfect point to aim for.
