This week unfolded in a way that felt quietly connected, even though the settings could not have been more different. An opening night at the Asian Art Museum, a leadership summit in Half Moon Bay, and a long overdue personal breakthrough all circled around the same underlying question of how we navigate complexity without losing clarity or intention. I started the week inside Chiharu Shiota’s exhibition at the Asian Art Museum, an experience that stayed with me far longer than I expected. Moving through her installations was not about understanding everything intellectually, but about noticing what surfaced emotionally. Memory, identity, absence, and connection were all present without being explained. Experiencing the exhibition alongside someone who knows the museum from the inside added another layer, and it reminded me how much care and invisible work goes into creating spaces that allow us to slow down and actually feel something. A few days later, the focus shifted from art to geopolitics and leadership at the GLOBIS G1SV Summit. The conversations there were unusually candid and grounded. What stood out most was how clearly and confidently Japan articulated its role in the current global environment. There was optimism, but it was disciplined. A strong sense of responsibility around security, technology, and AI. And a realism about the US, China, and the many countries in between that does not rely on slogans or easy narratives. For anyone working at the intersection of Japan, the US, and global business, these discussions felt immediately relevant rather than theoretical. To end the week on a more personal note, I finally wrote about something I carried quietly for years. Polite and business Japanese was my long running professional frustration, the one area I worked around instead of truly fixing. I share what finally changed that (with the help of Shohei Yoshida), why it mattered more than I expected, and why I think many experienced professionals underestimate how much unresolved language nuance can still shape confidence and effectiveness.
