This week's posts explored three very different topics: a Japanese psychological thriller, the unexpected value of longer workshops, and a memorable temple in Ishikawa Prefecture. Yet despite their differences, they all pointed toward the same idea: some of the most meaningful insights emerge when we slow down and look beyond the surface. On Monday, I reflected on Confessions by Kanae Minato, a novel that challenged me to reconsider how well we ever truly know another person. Told through a series of different perspectives, the story gradually reveals how incomplete our understanding of people often is. Each character views events through their own experiences, motivations, and emotions, making it impossible to rely on any single version of the truth. The novel reminded me how easy it is, both at work and in daily life, to form judgments based on limited information. More often than not, there is a much larger story unfolding beneath the surface than we realize. On Wednesday, I shared some observations from several recent workshops I facilitated for Japanese organisations in the United States and companies working closely with Japanese clients. Interestingly, many clients requested longer sessions than usual. What stood out was that the additional time didn't lead to more content being covered. Instead, it created space for deeper reflection, richer discussion, and more practical application. Participants had time to think, ask thoughtful questions, and connect the ideas to their own business challenges. The experience reinforced something I've observed throughout my years working with Japanese organisations: some of the most valuable contributions come after people have had time to reflect, process, and become comfortable sharing their perspectives. For Fun Friday, I looked back on visits to Natadera Temple in Komatsu, one of my favourite places in Ishikawa Prefecture. Surrounded by beautiful natural scenery, the temple has a way of encouraging visitors to slow down and appreciate their surroundings. Looking through old photographs also reminded me of something equally important: the friendships that enriched my years in Japan. While we often remember the places we've visited, it is usually the people we shared those experiences with who leave the deepest and most lasting impression. Looking back on the week, a common thread emerges. Whether we're trying to understand another person's behaviour, facilitate meaningful conversations, or appreciate a special place, the most valuable discoveries rarely happen at first glance. They often emerge later, after we've taken the time to listen more carefully, reflect more deeply, and see beyond our initial assumptions. Thank you, as always, for reading. Warmly, Saskia
