As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, I’ve been leaning into the rhythms of Japanese winter and the reflections that come with seasonal change. This week, I shared a few stories close to my heart, starting with the humble kotatsu. There’s something deeply comforting about this heated table, especially when you're living on a budget. It’s more than just warmth; it’s a symbol of slowing down, gathering close, and finding joy in simplicity. I also explored a phrase that’s been on my mind: “Nagai mono ni makarero”, literally, “let yourself be wrapped around by something long.” Often interpreted as going along with power, it’s a saying that invites deeper thought. In the context of Japan’s evolving leadership landscape, I reflected on what it might mean in a future where Japan sees its first female prime minister. Are we yielding to tradition, or shaping it anew? And then there was Sports Day, a celebration of sweat, smiles, and bento boxes. It’s one of those uniquely Japanese events that blends physical activity with community spirit, and it reminded me how shared experiences, even simple ones, can build lasting bonds. Looking ahead, I’m excited (and a little stressed!) about the Japan Society Gala tonight. I’m really looking forward to the evening, but I’ll admit, figuring out what to wear has been its own mini adventure.
