This week's posts took me into three very different worlds: a Japanese detective novel, a workshop conducted entirely in Japanese, and a historic cemetery overlooking Yokohama Harbor. Looking back, though, I realized they all left me thinking about the remarkable things our brains are capable of, and the equally remarkable people who came before us. On Monday, I wrote about Tokyo Express by Seichō Matsumoto, a classic Japanese mystery novel that somehow transforms train schedules and travel times into a gripping detective story. As I reflected on why detective novels remain one of my favorite ways to relax, I found myself thinking about how much the brain enjoys solving puzzles. Perhaps mindfulness isn't always about clearing our minds. Sometimes it's about giving them a single intriguing question to focus on instead. On Wednesday, I shared an experience from a recent client workshop in Los Angeles that I facilitated entirely in Japanese. Although I use both English and Japanese professionally every day, the experience was a good reminder that fluency and effortlessness are not the same thing. The post explores the hidden mental work involved in operating in a second language and why language learning is often less about words and more about freeing up cognitive energy for the things that really matter. For Fun Friday, I revisited one of my favorite lesser-known spots in Japan: the Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery and nearby Motomachi. Since it's Obon season, it felt like the perfect time to reflect on a place that tells the story of some of the earliest foreign residents who chose to build lives in Japan. Walking through the cemetery always leaves me with a sense of awe. The people buried there arrived in a country that had only recently reopened to the world, navigating enormous cultural and linguistic differences long before international travel, translation apps, or even reliable communication with home. Their stories helped shape modern Yokohama and, in many ways, the international Japan we know today. Looking back, all three posts highlight different aspects of human curiosity and adaptability. Our brains love solving mysteries. They can learn to work, negotiate, teach, and build relationships across languages and cultures. And throughout history, they have enabled people to venture into unfamiliar worlds and create connections where none previously existed.
