This week, I’ve been thinking a lot about the power of movement; not just across landscapes, but across cultures, workplaces, and ways of thinking. A recent trip on the California Zephyr reminded me how travel by train invites a different kind of presence. Whether it’s the quiet rhythm of an Amtrak ride or the scenic beauty of Japan’s railways, slow travel offers space for reflection and reconnection. It’s a gentle reminder that sometimes, the journey itself is the destination. In the world of work, I’ve been exploring the cultural nuances between Japanese jinji (人事) and U.S. HR practices, especially when it comes to feedback. The gap between indirect and direct communication styles can be wide, but with awareness and empathy, it becomes a bridge rather than a barrier. That theme of bridging cultures continued in Texas, where I had the chance to support Japanese companies and those supporting them navigating global talent development. It’s inspiring to see leaders embrace new perspectives while honoring their roots, and I’m proud to be part of that journey through my work with Japan Consulting Office. And finally, a delicious detour: Japan’s ekiben culture. These regionally inspired bento boxes, sold at train stations, are a celebration of local flavors and craftsmanship.
