This week’s posts sit at very different scales, but they’re all grappling with the same underlying question: how we live, work, and make decisions inside systems that are increasingly complex, interconnected, and hard to fully see. Monday’s piece began on a personal note. I spent my birthday, May the Fourth, at Stanford, listening to a full day of discussions on defense technology, AI, cyber, space, and the future of US alliances with Japan and beyond. What struck me was not the geopolitics, but how close all of this is to everyday life. The technologies discussed as “defense” are already the systems we rely on for navigation, finance, healthcare, and basic infrastructure. That realization turned into a reflection on trust, public understanding, and the idea that awareness itself has become a quiet but essential form of resilience. On Wednesday, I shared takeaways from the GLOBIS G1 Summit, where I attended a session on navigating a strategic roadmap for the US‑Japan alliance. The conversation was unusually pragmatic. Rather than debating ideals, speakers focused on constraints, trade‑offs, and the reality that Japan must make strategic decisions even when no option is clean or comfortable. AI, defense technology, interoperability, and the growing role of the private sector surfaced as immediate leadership challenges, alongside a clear warning about fragmentation and delayed action. I closed the week with something much lighter. A short reflection on gachapon, those capsule toy machines scattered across Japan that I almost never just walk past. Small, unnecessary, and oddly calming, they felt like a useful counterbalance to a week spent thinking about vast systems, long‑term risk, and responsibility. Sometimes a tiny, well‑made surprise is enough to ground you again. Three posts, different moods, one shared undercurrent. Living and working between Japan and the US means constantly shifting between big structural questions and very human moments.
