This week’s writing stayed close to a thread that I tend to come back to, even if it shows up in very different ways. The point where effort stops working in the way you expect, and you have to adjust, usually a bit later than you would have liked. On Monday, that came out of something very simple. A summer festival game that looks easy enough to figure out if you just pay attention and move quickly. That assumption disappears fairly quickly. What stayed with me wasn’t the difficulty itself, but that moment where trying to improve in the usual way doesn’t really change the outcome. It turns into something else instead. Less about getting better, more about stepping back in a way that doesn’t feel entirely natural. On Wednesday, the same idea showed up in a more structured setting. Cool Biz shifting again, this time a bit more visibly. On paper, it’s a practical change, but the reactions around it are what make it interesting. Not resistance, but small, layered observations. A sense that people are already used to adjusting, just not always in the same way. And an awareness that even when something is officially “allowed,” how it actually shows up still matters. Like most things in a Japanese workplace, it won’t change all at once. It will settle in gradually, shaped as much by appearance and context as by the policy itself. To end the week, I came back to something that had been sitting unresolved for a long time. A building in Otemachi I passed for years without really understanding it. It always felt slightly out of place, solid in a way that didn’t invite much attention, easy to imagine there was something more complicated behind it. The answer is straightforward, but knowing it shifts how you see it. All three pieces come back to a similar point. Where expectations and reality don’t quite line up, and adjusting is less about doing more, and more about seeing the situation differently.
