We’re only a week into the new year, and I’m already feeling the energy of 2026. This week on the blog, I explored three themes that are shaping my thoughts right now. First, the Year of the Horse. In the Japanese zodiac, the horse isn’t just about speed, it’s about freedom, movement, and boldness. That feels so relevant for the year ahead and how we approach both work and life. There’s also an interesting historical twist: the “fire horse” years, which come around every 60 years, were traditionally considered unlucky for women. In fact, birth rates in Japan dropped dramatically in 1966 because families feared having daughters born under that sign, believing they would be too strong-willed and bring misfortune. Today, those old superstitions feel outdated, but they remind us how cultural beliefs can shape society in unexpected ways. For me, the horse energy is about embracing independence and courage, qualities we need more than ever. Second, my focus for 2026: strengthening US-Japan collaboration. The world feels more interconnected than ever, and I believe deeper collaboration between the U.S. and Japan can unlock incredible opportunities. I shared what that means for me and why it matters, not just in business, but in building trust and understanding across cultures. Finally, mascot mania. If you’ve spent time in Japan, you know mascots are everywhere: from prefectures to police departments, even tax offices. These characters aren’t just cute; they serve a real purpose. They make official messages more approachable, create emotional connections, and give communities a sense of identity. Think about Kumamon from Kumamoto or Funassyi from Funabashi: these mascots have become cultural icons and even economic drivers. It’s a fascinating example of how Japan blends playfulness with communication, and I think there’s a lesson here for global businesses: never underestimate the power of personality in branding.
