This week finds me back home in California after a busy stretch of travel, although not for long. On Sunday I'll be heading back to Tokyo for client meetings and events, which means there's a good chance you'll see a few extra photos, observations, and reflections appearing on LinkedIn over the coming week. Japan always seems to provide an endless supply of material for both my work and my writing. As I looked back over this week's posts, I realized they all revolve around something I think about often: the details we notice, and the things we learn when we pay attention. On Monday, I explored a question I've heard many times and have asked myself more than once: why does everything taste better in Japan? The inspiration came from a memorable breakfast at Clinton St. Baking Company in Aoyama and a later visit to one of my favorite shops, SOU・SOU. What struck me was that both experiences reflected the same underlying principle. Whether it's a plate of French toast, a beautifully designed textile, or a thoughtfully delivered service, there is often a visible commitment to craftsmanship. Not perfection, but genuine care. The post became less about food and more about the people behind the scenes whose attention to detail quietly shapes our everyday experiences. On Wednesday, I wrote from Minneapolis after spending time with a group of Japanese expatriates. We often describe our work at JCO as helping bridge communication gaps, but the conversations reminded me that language is usually only a small part of the challenge. The real work involves interpreting assumptions, expectations, and intent between people who may be approaching the same situation from very different perspectives. Sitting in a conference room in the American Midwest and conducting much of the discussion in Japanese felt like a reminder of how interconnected our business world has become. At the same time, it reinforced how important human understanding remains, even in an increasingly digital age. For Fun Friday, I shared a travel confession: I genuinely love the Airport Limousine Bus. Japan's railways deserve every bit of their legendary reputation, but after a long-haul flight there's something wonderfully civilized about sitting down, handing over your luggage, and letting someone else do the work. The post also gave me an excuse to revisit one of my favorite travel memories: an old airport bus announcement reminding passengers not to "annoy the neighbors." It's a phrase that has stayed with me for years and somehow captures both British understatement and the thoughtful consideration for others that Japan often excels at encouraging. Looking across all three posts, a common theme emerged: appreciation for things that are easy to overlook. A carefully prepared meal. A conversation that helps people understand one another. A well-designed transportation service. None of these are particularly dramatic. Yet they all reflect the same idea that small details matter and that thoughtful effort often has a larger impact than we realize. Perhaps that's one reason I enjoy writing these weekly reflections.
