Making connections with young people: Checking out the Itsukushima Maru - a Japan Coast Guard ship visiting San Francisco.
Last week, I wrote about the importance of volunteering to find a sense of community. Since connecting with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of Northern California, I’ve been fortunate to receive invitations to local events that celebrate the vibrant Japanese community here.
This weekend, I had the incredible opportunity to visit the Itsukushima Maru, a Japan Coast Guard ship visiting San Francisco, where I met some inspiring young cadets who live and study aboard for four years.
As I walked through the ship, their cheerful voices greeted me with warm hellos in both English and Japanese. I was truly struck by the camaraderie and dedication of these cadets. As we chatted about life on board, we bonded over talking about delicious curry rice and the unique experience of having a full Japanese bathtub on the ship!
Talking with these young people was invigorating; their enthusiasm for their studies was a wonderful thing to behold. I left the ship with a heart full of stories and excitement to share with my husband.
What inspired you this past weekend?
