More finding your tribe: An evening with author Jake Adelstein!
My journey in Japan began in 1997, in a quaint rural town along the stunning Japan Sea. So, when Jake Adelstein’s memoir, Tokyo Vice, was released, I eagerly devoured it as it offered a glimpse into a Japan I had yet to discover—full of yakuza, gambling, and intrigue!
As a fan of both fictional and true crime, I also read his subsequent books and enjoyed the HBO series. Revisiting 90s Japan through his work was so much fun. If you haven’t watched it yet, I highly recommend it!
Last Wednesday, I was fortunate to attend an event organized by the Japan Society of Northern California : Jake Adelstein in Conversation. It was my first visit to the San Francisco Public Library, such an incredible building. The talk was engaging and filled with energy, the auditorium was packed with a crowd of about 200 people. Seeing Jake talk in person was wonderful, although I couldn’t stay for the book signing due to the long line so alas no selfie!
What made the evening even more special was connecting with new friends. There’s something wonderful about bonding with others while waiting for an event to start and discussing what brought you there. I’m sure we’ll meet again at future events!
