The importance of introductions in Japanese business culture
Last week, I wrote about the considerable effort required to convince a Japanese client to use your services. One effective shortcut to finding new business—and even employment—is through introductions. In Japanese culture, introductions play a pivotal role in establishing relationships and building trust.
Introductions serve as a means to create a foundation of trust and mutual respect. When someone introduces you to a potential employer or business partner, it is not just a simple introduction; it carries the weight of their reputation. This connection often paves the way for smoother interactions and negotiations.
When I decided to move to Tokyo for my MBA at GLOBIS University, I quickly realized the importance of networking. I had some experience in my field, but I knew that having no network or formal experience in Japan would make it very hard for me to land a good job immediately.
I began by reaching out to friends and acquaintances in Tokyo. Through meeting these connections at networking events, I was introduced to several professionals in my industry. One particular introduction was to an expat senior manager at a well-known consulting company.
During our first meeting, I was surprised by the number of questions this manager had regarding communication gaps they had noticed within their Tokyo team. I was able to share insights into some cultural idiosyncrasies and offer strategies for effective communication in a Japanese business context. This exchange not only showcased my expertise but also built rapport.
A short while later, this manager introduced me to their department head, which led to a formal interview. I was thrilled to receive a job offer that included visa sponsorship within a few weeks!
In Japanese business culture, introductions are more than mere formalities; they are essential tools for building relationships and trust. My experience in Tokyo underscored the importance of networking and leveraging connections to navigate the job market successfully. For anyone looking to thrive in Japan or in an environment working with Japanese colleagues or clients, embracing this aspect of the culture can open doors and create opportunities that would otherwise remain closed.
