Turn your Kagami Mochi into Oshiruko (お汁粉)!

We bought Kagami Mochi (鏡餅 - mirror rice cake) to celebrate New Year. I thought it was just a decoration but I'm so glad my husband introduced me to oshiruko!

I forgot to take a picture of the Kagami Mochi we bought, so forgive the grainy picture I lifted from the store's website.

I still have the cute little hebi (snake) that symbolizes this year. The mochi we turned into oshiruko. As you can see, the shiruko looks really yummy and it was!

So, what is it? It's a warm sweet red bean soup (anko) with half-melted sticky mochi inside, perfect for a cold day! My husband made ours very simply by warming up canned anko, and grilling the broken mochi in our oven (you’re not supposed to cut it as that brings bad luck apparently!).

The sweet stickiness contrasts with the crunchy grilled texture of the mochi, I absolutely love it!

So, next time, rather than throw away your Kagami Mochi turn it into oshiruko!
