Why language training still matters in the age of AI week 2: Learn Japanese in 3 hours
I often talk about how much Japanese professionals invest in communicating globally, but real partnership means the effort cannot flow only in one direction. Global colleagues need opportunities too. Which is why I am so proud of the Learn Japanese in 3 Hours session that our Japan Consulting Office colleague Aska Tsuchiya created, and that Midori Yamanaka now teaches so expertly for our teams in the US.
And the demand is unbelievable. We cannot keep up with the bookings. Every time we open a new slot, it fills immediately, including the most recent sessions for our client Mizuho Americas.
Of course, it is impossible to learn Japanese in just three hours. Everyone knows that. But that is not the point of the session. What makes it so effective is the method itself. It removes the fear and overwhelm that often come with Japanese. It gives people a structured, confidence‑boosting starting point that finally feels manageable. For many, it is the first time Japanese feels accessible instead of intimidating.
The format is intentional. Small groups of up to 8, arranged by level and comfort. Midori creates a relaxed atmosphere where people can try out real expressions, ask honest questions, and experiment without pressure.
Participants learn greetings, workplace language, cultural nuance and practical phrases they can use immediately with their Japan teams.
And the feedback speaks for itself.
I finally understand why this expression sounds polite.
This helps me so much with Tokyo.
I did not know the nuance mattered that much.
I learned more in this short session than in weeks of apps.
What stands out most is the willingness of non‑Japanese colleagues to make an effort. Even a few words of Japanese, spoken warmly and sincerely, have an outsized impact.
Japanese teams notice it right away. It changes the tone of interactions. It deepens trust. It shows that the relationship matters enough for us to take a step toward them too.
Between these Japanese crash courses for global colleagues and the English practice sessions I facilitate for Japanese teams, I see a healthy and meaningful balance. Both sides leaning in. Both sides learning. Both sides meeting each other halfway.
Because in global work, it is not about perfection in another language. It is about mutual effort, curiosity and connection.
