A Pumpkin Soupuccino, anyone?
A few years ago, if someone had told me that one day I'd walk into Starbucks and order a pumpkin soup, I would have assumed they were joking.
Yet here we are.
I recently came across an article on SoraNews24 about Starbucks Japan's new Pumpkin Soupuccino, and it immediately caught my attention. Not because I'd tried it, but because I'd never even had the chance. The drink is a recent addition, and since I left Japan in 2018, this is one seasonal Starbucks creation that completely escaped me.
Still, it feels perfectly Japanese.

One of the things I always enjoyed while living in Japan was watching the arrival of each new season through food and drink. Coffee shops, convenience stores, department store food halls, bakeries... nobody embraces seasonal flavors quite like Japan.
What's interesting is that Japanese seasonal products often go beyond the predictable. While many countries stop at pumpkin spice lattes and pumpkin pie, Japan looks at a pumpkin and asks, "What else can we do with this?"
The result is something like a Soupuccino: part soup, part café experience, and exactly the kind of creative seasonal product I've come to associate with Japan. Even from thousands of miles away, I can easily imagine seeing signs for it outside my local Starbucks and thinking, "Well, I wasn't planning to order soup today, but now I'm curious."
Whether the Pumpkin Soupuccino becomes a seasonal classic or simply this year's conversation starter remains to be seen. But it certainly reminded me of one of the things I miss about Japan: the ability to take something familiar and turn it into something unexpectedly delightful.
Happy Friday, and if anyone in Japan has actually tried the Pumpkin Soupuccino, I'd love to hear whether it's more soup, more cappuccino, or somehow both. 🎃🍂
