Golden Kamuy & Golden Kamuy 2: excellent and fun material to practice your Japanese listening skills!
More stuff to watch & learn at the same time: Golden Kamuy is an exciting film and series that combine action, adventure, and a touch of history. Based on the manga by Satoru Noda, it’s set in early 20th-century Japan, right after the Russo-Japanese War.
The story follows Saichi Sugimoto (Kento Yamazaki, also in the Kingdom movies - see last week), a war veteran looking for a hidden treasure of Ainu gold.
He teams up with Asirpa (Anna Yamada), a young Ainu girl, to navigate the rugged landscapes of Hokkaido. Together, they face all sorts of challenges while uncovering Ainu culture and traditions along the way.
Both film and series balance intense action with moments of humor and friendship, making it super engaging and fun. Plus, the locations are stunning, capturing the beautiful environment of Hokkaido. I've never visited Hokkaido, but now it's at the top of my bucket list!
I really enjoyed watching Golden Kamuy and I'm so happy that the story is still not complete! I'm eagerly awaiting the next series to find out what happens next in their quest to find the gold, so I hope that it will come out soon.
In the meantime, my husband and I have started calling miso paste 'osoma' ( 💩 in Ainu language apparently).
