Tiny rituals that make mornings happier

It’s Fun Friday, and today I’m celebrating two small things on my desk that quietly set the tone for my day.

First up, my perpetual Totoro calendar. Solid, cheerful, and endlessly reusable, it sits there calmly marking the date with its little wooden blocks, completely unbothered by deadlines or meetings. There’s something deeply comforting about it. No flipping pages, no pressure. Just a gentle reminder of what day it is, delivered with Studio Ghibli charm. Totoro has a way of making even the most ordinary morning feel a little softer.

Right next to it is my daily Louise Hay calendar, which I tear off every morning before the workday really begins. One sentence. One intention. A pause before the rush. Some days it’s reassuring, other days gently challenging, but it always invites reflection. It’s amazing how a single positive affirmation can subtly shift your mindset before emails and tasks take over.

Together, these two calendars create a small but powerful ritual. One grounds me in the day, the other grounds me in myself. Add a big cup of coffee, and suddenly the morning feels less like a launch into obligation and more like a conscious beginning.

This combination feels very “Japan-adjacent” in spirit, even if one of them isn’t Japanese by origin. It’s the idea that everyday objects matter. That how you start your day matters. That joy doesn’t have to be loud or complicated. Sometimes it’s a familiar character, a thoughtful sentence, and a warm mug in your hands.

I love how these little desk companions remind me to slow down, even briefly, and start the day on a positive note. Work will be work. The to-do list will still be there. But beginning the day with intention, comfort, and a hint of whimsy makes everything that follows just a bit more manageable.

As the weekend begins, I’ll leave you with an invitation. When Monday comes around, try starting your day this way. One small ritual. One positive thought. One good cup of coffee. You might be surprised how much lighter the day feels.

Wishing you a restful weekend and a happy start to the week ahead.
